2012-2013 SEASON

WHERE ARE WE?

The title of the new season at the Bitef Theatre WHERE ARE WE? implies the permanent questioning of the social circumstances which condition our sense of belonging or not-belonging, the feeling of rootedness or precisely of its lack, the questioning of those social mechanisms that affect our lives but are to be found in large part out of our control and far from the domains in which we have the ability for direct action.

On the foundations laid by this questioning, we have built our rich dramatic season of 2012-13 – presenting the production Far Away by Tamara Bosak directed by Nenad Prokić, Scratching by Selma Spahić based on the text by Tanja Šljivar, the theatre production of Bent by Martin Sherman, directed by Andrej Nosov and the production Finger by Doruntina Basha directed by Ana Tomović. Within our drama program, this season we also further continue our exceptionally successful collaboration with the Heartefact Foundation.

In the new season, we are also staging two dance productions by the Bitef Dance Company - the dance production for children Phe, no, me, no, lo, gy choreographed by Dalija Aćin Thelander and the production Yesterday, choreographed by one of the most eminent choreographers of the British dance scene - Jasmin Vardimon.

We will also present to the Belgrade audience the work of five exceptionally interesting authors working with boundary forms between dance art and performance art in the production AEIOU and they are Dragana Alfirević, Ana Dubljević, Igor Koruga, Dragana Bulut and Miloš Sofrenović. The majority of these authors are building their careers abroad, which makes it an even greater pleasure to present their work to the domestic audience.

Bitef Dance Company

The project of founding the Bitef Dance Company was stimulated by the great creative and aesthetic potential of the contemporary dance theatre, as well as by the need for Belgrade to have, for the very first time in its theatrical history, a dance company that is permanently linked to an institution of culture. Aside from the National Theatre which fosters classical and neoclassical dance styles and the Terazije Theatre which fosters the style of the musical, through the formation of the Bitef Dance Company, the Bitef Theatre has created a platform for the development of the latest styles in dance within the wider domain of performing arts.

The dancers and the diverse repertoire of the Bitef Dane Company have secured for Belgrade an elite dance troupe, whose mission is to promote contemporary dance throughout Serbia, as well as through guest appearances in the region and on the European dance scene.

The daily work of the company encompasses classical and contemporary dance training, as well as collaborations with the most eminent domestic and international choreographers and directors, such as Guy Weizman, Roni Haver, Dalija Aćin Thelander, Edward Clug, Isidora Stanišić, Jasmin Vardimon... For the Bitef Dance Company, new pieces have been created by some of the domestic authors who have been building exceptionally successful careers abroad, such as Zoran Marković, Leo Mujić and Dunja Jocić, whilst the repertoire of the troupe has been enriched by the formation of the dance scene for children, through which we are fulfilling the aim of bringing new dance forms closer to the youngest audience.
