Paranoia Chic |
Duration: min. |
The performance explores the states of mind generated through the systematic production of paranoia which is constantly encouraged and publicized, being a suitable disguise for various economic and political measures in the form of “shock-therapy”. Deprivation from one of the basic needs – the need for safety – reduces critical thought, while the proper daily amount of fear transforms a person into a non-stop alert beast. Ready, steady and the constantly postponed: go! creates an atmosphere of tension making the performance hardly bearable up to the moment of culmination, when the system-managed paranoia becomes a cool image of terror, the moment when paranoia becomes chic. American audience is constantly informed about the level of alertness by the means of colour-coded threat level system which appears in the corner of TV sets: green colour represents a low level of danger, the next level is blue, then yellow and orange, while red stands for the highest level of danger. This system came after a “Bikini system” which also contained white colour, denoting the lack of information regarding any specified danger. White was never used. “A startled open-mouthed fashion model is staring at the camera, or to be more precise: through the camera at the imminent danger. A shaft of light provides a discreet illumination of a futuristic lipstick. That is the look we are aiming to achieve, the look we desire.” Flamingo’s eye is bigger than its brain.
